Celtic Woman — Believe premiered December 2011.
About the Program
Internationally renowned for their stage productions and songs of heartwarming inspiration, Celtic Woman returned to PBS in December 2011 with the special, Believe. The distinctive ensemble of female performers, originally comprised of four singers and a violinist, was brought together in 2004 by David Downes, the former musical director of Riverdance, and producer Sharon Browne. The 2005 PBS broadcast of their concert from The Helix in Dublin, Ireland introduced Celtic Woman to American audiences and their popularity has continued to grow in the U.S. ever since.
Believe stars vocalists Chloë Agnew and Lisa Kelly, who are original members of the ensemble along with violinist Máiréad Nesbitt, and Lisa Lambe, the troupe's newest member. They performed classic Irish songs (“The Water Is Wide,” “Green Grow the Rushes,” “A Woman’s Heart” and “The Parting Glass”), timeless pop anthems (“Bridge Over Troubled Water”), and inspirational songs (“You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Ave Maria”) with their signature Celtic Woman twist, under the musical direction of David Downes.
Celtic Woman’s previous public television specials were filmed at historic locations around Ireland, including Slane Castle and Powerscourt House & Gardens. For the first time ever, this Celtic Woman concert was taped in the United States, at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA. The group's sold-out performances at the former grand movie palace, now a designated National Historic Landmark, featured a dazzling array of visual and musical effects, including a 20-piece orchestra, seven-piece Celtic Woman band, 16-piece Atlanta bag pipe band and lush vocal harmonies from the 10-member Aontas Choir and a 30-member children’s choir.
Since Celtic Woman’s March 2005 American debut, the unique all-female ensemble has become a commercial success: four of their six recordings have made it to No. 1 on Billboard's World Albums chart, and they have sold millions of CDs worldwide. Although the group's lineup of performers has undergone changes since its formation, Celtic Woman’s evocative, uplifting music has crossed national and cultural borders to touch the hearts of a devoted fan base that spans the globe.
The Believe CD and DVD were released in January 2012.
